This wasn’t going well.
It was awkward and uncomfortable and probably everything you would have expected a first time to be, and while every instinct was telling her to tell him to stop, put them both out of their misery, she couldn’t find herself actually saying anything to deter him. She wasn’t uncomfortable in a bad way—it was mostly discomfort that came from not knowing where to put their arms or legs, not quite sure how to fit together in just the right way. She just swallowed the thoughts and tried to focus on him kissing her, the feel of his shoulders under fingertips, and hoping that somehow they wound manage to find what they were looking for over time.
It had taken them some time to get to this point to begin with. Will was a nice boy, patient—probably far more patient than she deserved—and she loved him. Regardless, it had still taken her some time to get to this point without panicking completely, and she wanted to continue. She wanted this, she wanted him, and she wasn’t going to put them out of their misery—regardless of whether or not the fates were telling her if it was or wasn’t the right moment. She’d heard that first times were supposed to be awkward, so she was chalking it up to being part of the norm. The norm was fine. If anything, she was craving something normal and average, just to prove for once that she was. It had been going just fine until he pulled away from the kiss, resting his forehead against hers and bracing himself above her.
“This isn’t going well, is it?”
For some reason, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. She looked up at him for a moment, briefly, biting down on her lip as she tried not to, but she couldn’t help herself. A brief bubble of a giggle slipped up between her lips and she just dissolved, one hand coming up to cover her mouth as if to keep the laughter in, but she was still betrayed by the shake of her shoulders as she leaned back against the bed.
Will looked playfully insulted, looking down at her. “Are you laughing at me?” That only managed to make her laugh harder, and she tried to shake her head that she wasn’t laughing at him, just the situation, but she failed, and only managed to roll over onto her side away from him while he rolled off her, dropping on the side of the bed next her.
“Oi! I did not come down here an’ get naked just so you can laugh at me, Abs,” he teased, looking over at her and trying to pretend he was still insulted and not trying not to laugh himself.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she said breathlessly, once she’d finally regained her voice. “I didn’t—I wasn’t laughing at you.”
He flashed her a bright grin, before shifting closer to her and brushing a kiss against her bare shoulder. “I know you weren’t.” He sighed, before resting his head against her shoulder and staring up at the ceiling. “But I’m starting to think we’re not supposed to do this.”
She made a slightly disappointed noise, before shifting, rolling over to face him. “Don’t quit on me now.”
“It’s not that I want to,” he sighed, shifting as well so that he was mimicking her position on the bed. “I just think we’re being shown a sign here, love. The fates are telling us no.”
She pouted slightly at that, before leaning in to kiss him gently. He returned the kiss eagerly, one hand sliding down over her side and to her back before she pushed herself closer to him, shifting so that he was on his back and she was moving on top of him. He looked up at her for a moment, his hands sliding down until he was gripping her hips softly.
“I think,” she replied as she broke the kiss, “that maybe we just need to try a different position.”
He leaned back into the pillows, watching her for a minute, and then there was a moment that was almost concern. “Are you really sure?”
“Yes,” she said with a nod, before leaning in to kiss him again. “Positive.”
He met her in the kiss, moving one hand up to cup the side of her face lightly before bracing one hand against her back and flipping her over again moving in closer and finally finding a way that just worked.
“I think we can figure this out, then,” he said with a nod, hand sliding over her sides lightly as he leaned in to kiss her again.
“Good,” she sighed, before leaning back and letting him control the ride.
